Favorite Thing #7 – Indoor “window” boxes
This idea came to me from some old deep shelves that were left at my mom’s house when she bought it. She wasn’t sure what to do with them and I didn’t really know either but I figured I could find some use for them. They were sitting out on our enclosed porch when it occurred to me one day that I could fill them with plants! I picked an easy plant (pothus) since I’m still learning how to keep green things alive.
To do this project, you’ll first need to find yourself some shelves. Or you could just get some outdoor window boxes, that’s pretty much the effect that this gives off.
Next, find someone who knows what they are doing and mount the shelves/window boxes to the wall. These will end up being quite heavy after they’ve been watered, so make sure this step is done correctly.
Then, since these are not in fact outside, I lined the shelves with some heavy duty plastic, like the type you buy in a roll at Lowes. Try to use only one piece so that there aren’t any seams where water could seep through.
Finally, you can fill with potting soil and plants. I was able to do this with one hanging plant for each shelf, and they turned out very full and beautiful.
If you give this idea a try, post a picture in the comments. I’d love to see what you come up with!
