Favorite Thing #24 – The Four Winds
Happy Friday! I am happy to report that everyone in my house is healthy and we all went back to school yesterday. Austin is even headed back to work today. There is a beautiful coating of snow outside and I am excited for a great homeschool day here full of math, reading, and sledding.
Today’s favorite thing is a book. I know its shocking, since books are so often my favorite things. This one, The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah, is excellent and is worth the 16 hours on audio or however long it takes you to read the print version. It is a captivating story with a lovable heroin who fights through the unimaginable for her family. Prior to reading this book I did not know much about the Dust Bowl. One of my favorite things about reading historical novels is that they tend to send me off in a tail spin of reading other things on the same topic. While I felt like I knew quite a bit about the great depression since I studied it as an economics major, the Dust Bowl is not something that had really been a part of that education. This book opened eyes to a world I had not previously been aware of and left me wanting to know more. If you need a good book for these cold winter days, The Four Winds is an excellent choice. Please note: this is an adult book, it should not be read with your children =).
